Yes. A newly licensed startup in Dubai can apply for a business bank account without a monthly maintenance fee, if it meets the bank’s requirements. Mbank’s Basic Business Account currently lists no monthly or annual fee and no minimum average balance; its published FAQs say new UAE trade licence holders, including free zone companies, can apply. Some transactions and services still cost money, and approval is decided by the bank.
A “free” label tells you little about eligibility, currencies or actual running costs.
What Does “Free” Mean for a Startup?
Founders often compare accounts using three claims that mean different things:
| Term | What it means | What it does not tell you |
| No opening fee | No bank charge just to create the account | Whether you pay monthly or per transaction |
| No minimum balance | No set average balance to maintain | Whether the package charges a monthly subscription |
| No monthly fee | No recurring maintenance charge for that plan | Whether transfers, cards or cash deposits cost extra |
A zero-balance business account can therefore have a monthly fee. Equally, a plan with no monthly fee can charge for services. Ask for the bank’s full schedule of charges and key fact statement. Any fee charged by a business account opening consultant is separate from bank fees.
Which UAE Business Bank Accounts Are Worth Comparing?
These official examples show how pricing differs.
| Bank and plan | Published monthly charge | Minimum balance and practical point |
| Mbank Basic Business Account | Free | No minimum average balance or annual fee; AED accounts only. |
| Mashreq NEO BIZ Pro | AED 99 | No minimum balance; the plan still has a monthly charge. |
| Wio Business Essential | AED 99 | Includes a set number of local transfers; check the cost of other services. |
| Emirates NBD Connect | AED 249 | No minimum monthly average balance; limited branch access and higher transaction charges. |
Mbank Basic avoids a monthly charge, but supports AED accounts only. Founders needing other currencies should compare further.
Consider a startup making regular cash deposits. Mbank’s tariff lists AED 5.25 for a deposit through specified exchange houses and AED 52.50 for a deposit at a branch teller. It also requires a AED 10,000 statement balance for cheque book issuance, even though the account has no minimum average balance. Its listed charges are inclusive of 5% VAT.
Compare estimated yearly cost = monthly fees + transaction charges + service charges.
Can a Newly Formed Mainland or Free Zone Company Qualify?
Mbank expressly states that UAE companies with valid trade licences, including free zone companies, may apply and that a new licence holder can open an account. That answers a common worry for founders without a year of trading history: being new does not automatically prevent an application.
Banks still assess your legal form, activity, ownership, address, signatories and expected transactions.
For a new business with no corporate bank statements or completed customer invoices, explain what is and is not available. Prepare your licence, business description, expected activity and any genuine contracts or evidence of initial funding. Do not invent trading history to fill a gap.
What Documents Should a Startup Prepare?
Mbank’s and Mashreq’s published lists include some or all of the following, depending on the applicant:
- Valid trade licence and incorporation documents.
- Memorandum of Association and relevant amendments, where applicable.
- Board resolution or other proof of banking authority.
- Shareholders’ passports and Emirates IDs, as requested.
- Proof of company address.
- Bank statements or additional supporting information, where applicable.
If your company does not issue a conventional MOA, ask the bank which constitutional document it accepts for that legal structure. If a document is not yet available because you have only just formed the company, say so during the application.
Check Who Has Banking Power
Before submitting an application, read the current MOA, any amendments and the board resolution. Identify who can open and operate the account. If two signatures are required, do not describe one founder as a sole signatory. If authority comes from a power of attorney, check that its wording covers the banking acts requested and that the bank accepts it.
Resolve any mismatch between the application and legal signatory powers before submitting.
Why Does the Bank Ask About KYC and Source of Funds?
Know Your Customer checks help the bank identify the company, its beneficial owners and the purpose of the account. UAE Central Bank guidance calls for an understanding of the business and its ownership, with scrutiny of transactions and, where necessary, the source of funds.
Write a short, accurate description of:
- What your startup sells or provides.
- Who its likely customers and suppliers are, and where they are based.
- Expected incoming and outgoing payments.
- How the initial capital or first deposit was funded.
Label projections as estimates and supply evidence when requested. Approval is always the bank’s decision.
How to Apply: A Startup Checklist
- Choose the account features you need. Note expected currencies, local and international transfers, payroll, cash, cheques and user access.
- Read the current pricing. Separate account-opening, monthly, minimum-balance and usage charges.
- Confirm eligibility. Ask whether your mainland or free zone legal form and activity are supported.
- Check company records. Make names, licence details, ownership and signatory powers consistent.
- Prepare a business profile. Explain the activity, likely counterparties, expected turnover and initial funding honestly.
- Apply through the bank’s channel. Submit documents, complete identity checks and respond to requests promptly.
- Verify activation. Confirm the approved package, limits and charges before putting account details on invoices.
Ask whether a call, meeting or original document review is required.
How Long Does Business Account Opening Take?
There is no universal approval period. Wio advertises getting businesses up and running in three working days, but that is an advertised onboarding timeline, not a commitment for every application. Reviews can take longer if documents are incomplete, authority is unclear or the bank needs more information about the business.
Use the account for invoices once it is active.
